Is chiropractic treatment just for back pain?
Chiropractors are specialists of the spine, but can treat any alignment problem from feet and ankles,
chest and shoulders, to wrists and hands. Many ailments are related in some way to a spinal problem.
Can chiropractic care help my “slipped disc”?
Spinal discs are not simply stacked bone segments. They are fluid-cushions that act as shock absorbers between the bones of the spine. The discs allow for pain-free movement and keep the vertebrae from grinding against each other. They work perfectly when the spine is correctly aligned.
When the spine becomes misaligned due to stress, accident, or a dislocation, a disc may “bulge” out between the vertebrae and lose its fluid. Eventually the vertebrae rub against each other, causing severe pain. Traditional treatments often involve surgery and pain-killing drugs.
Chiropractic treatment focuses on gently realigning the spine so the affected disc no longer “bulges”.
This realignment helps prevent deterioration of the disc and provides the needed cushion
between the vertebrae, which ultimately alleviates the pain.
What is treatment like?
On the first visit you will receive an exam designed to identify the nature of your problem. Xrays may be taken as needed. Once the issue has been pinpointed, a chiropractic "adjustment" will be administered to the specific location of the injury to your spine and/or other affected joints. This adjustment may correct existing misalignments, increase joint mobility, and relieve pressure on irritated tissues and nerves.
Additionally, you may receive physio-therapy on any affected soft tissues (muscles,
ligaments, and/or tendons) to help with pain, inflammation and muscle spasms.
Is chiropractic treatment “safe”?
Chiropractic care is extremely safe. Doctors of Chiropractic receive extensive training and have the expertise and experience to use just the right amount of pressure on your spine and joints to bring you back into alignment. When you compare chiropractic with the number of side effects in traditional medicine, chiropractic care shows up as very safe indeed. Some have estimated the risks as one million to one.
How long will it take to fully recover?
Each person responds to treatment differently. Recovery times often depend on the amount of damage, length of time the problem has persisted, and severity of pain. Some patients experience immediate relief while others require extended treatment.
The first appointment can take up to an hour, but subsequent appointments are usually completed much more quickly.
Do I have to stay in treatment forever?
No. Some people visit a chiropractor to treat a single, specific ailment and, once pain free, end their treatment. Others choose to receive regular wellness treatments on a monthly basis. The decision to continue treatment is yours, and yours alone. At Frank Chiropractic Health Center, you will be given all the information needed to make an informed decision about the length and extent of your treatment. Once made, your decision will be treated with respect.
